Prime Minister Narendra Modi late on Monday left the twitter abuzz after he posted a tweet claiming that he is contemplating to give up his social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. While the tweet might have created a stir among his followers as well as critics, it seems Modi is in no mood to bid adieu to social media—one of the strongest platforms for him to interact with citizens.
After the hullaballoo over his tweet, the Prime Minister on Tuesday put an end to the suspense. He tweeted: “This Women’s Day, I will give away my social media accounts to women whose life and work inspire us. This will help them ignite motivation in millions”. He also urged women achievers to come up with their inspiring stories and share them with the hashtag #sheinspiresus. He said selected entries will get a chance to take over his social media accounts and share their thoughts with the world. Notably, the International Women’s Day is going to be celebrated on March 8.
While many appreciated the way in which Modi created suspense on Monday and later unveiled it on Tuesday, the Prime Minister’s critics came up with memes and sarcastic tweets. However, moments after the Prime Minister’s tweet, the hashtag #sheinspiresus started trending on twitter.
Interestingly, many BJP leaders and followers of the Prime Minister have threatened to stop using social media if the PM quits using them. On the contrary, several Congress leaders and critics of the prime minister were seen taking a sarcastic jibe on the Prime Minister’s tweet on Monday where he said he is contemplating to leave social media. Many had also asked Modi to urge his followers to leave social media as well.
