PM Modi meets Pope Francis in Vatican on Day 2 of Italy visit


Vatican: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a visit to Italy, reached the Vatican City on Saturday to meet Pope Francis. External Affairs minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval are accompanying him.

PM Modi was greeted by Head of the Papal Household Mons. Leonardo Sapienza in the Vatican.

Later, he had a one-on-one meeting with Pope Francis, where they discussed issues like Covid-19 and climate change.

Earlier, Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla had said the Vatican has not set any agenda for the talks. “I believe tradition is not to have an agenda when you discuss issues with His Holiness… I’m sure the issues that will be covered will cover a range of areas of interests in terms of the general global perspectives and issues that are important to all of us,” he had said.

PM Modi is the fifth Indian PM to meet the Pope, also the head of the Roman Catholics.

He had reached Italy on Friday. He is scheduled to participate in the two-day G20 Summit. He will also be meeting French President Emmanuel Macron and Indonesia President Joko Widodod. PM Modi will be in Italy till October 31.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden met Pope Francis.
