Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow to pay last respects to former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. Notably, Singh, 89, died on Saturday evening due to sepsis and multiple organ failure.
PM Modi reached Singh’s residence at Mall Avenue in Lucknow around 11.30 am to pay his respects to the former UP CM’s mortal remains. “We lost a capable leader. We should make maximum efforts by taking his values and resolutions to compensate for him; we should leave no stone unturned in fulfilling his dreams,” PM Modi said after paying homage to Singh at his residence.
On Saturday, PM Modi took to Twitter to condole the passing of Kalyan Singh. “Generations to come will remain forever grateful to Kalyan Singh Ji for his contributions towards India’s cultural regeneration. He was firmly rooted in Indian values and took pride in our centuries-old traditions,” the prime minister had tweeted.

He also recounted Kalyan Singh’s efforts to uplift people of marginalised sections. He also paid tribute to Kalyan Singh’s works for the empowerment of women and farmers. “Kalyan Singh Ji gave voice to crores of people belonging to the marginalised sections of society. He made numerous efforts towards the empowerment of farmers, youngsters and women,” PM Modi said.

State mourning Kalyan Singh
Singh had been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in the Uttar Pradesh capital since July 4. On Friday, his condition deteriorated, following which he was placed on dialysis. UP CM Yogi Adityanath, who visited Singh in the hospital earlier on Saturday, also expressed his condolences, calling his death an irreparable loss. His government has declared three days of state mourning and a holiday on August 23.
