As Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays the foundation stone of Ram Temple at Ayodhya, a controversy erupted in Ahmedabad around the same time.
The Ranip Police detained Antarrashtriya Hindu Parishad (AHP) leader and Gujarat Bajrang Dal leader for allegedly trying to create trouble.
The AHP had organised idol worship of Ram and Sita at every crossroad in the city.
But even before the day of the foundation stone laying arrived, the police detained top leaders of the organisation in the early morning.
Social media posts about the detention also became viral.
Nikunj Parekh was among those who were detained.
Idols of Lord Ram and Sita were recovered from his possession.
Soon anti-government posts began doing the round taunting the Gujarat government that it did not want any celebrations of Lord Ram.
Earlier too the AHP had tried to confront the government over the Rathyatra issue in a similar manner.
The Rathyatra this time was restricted within the temple premises as per a court order.
The AHP had tried to organise the same across the city.
The state government had managed to prevent the AHP from holding a parallen Rathyatra in view of COVID-19.
The AHP had also approached the court in the matter but the petition was dismissed.
AHP had announced that it would take out a yatra at every crossroad in the city before PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya today.
What AHP leader said
“The government has a problem even if we celebrate Lord Ram. I have been wrongfully detained. It is not a crime to worship Ram-Sita yet I am being treated as if I have done a crime,” Parekh said.
