PM launches Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan for returnee migrant labourers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the “Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan” which is aimed at generating employment opportunities in rural India for migrant workers returning home from cities due to COVID-19. Modi said the scheme had been ‘inspired by migrants’ and that labourers who had earlier contributed to the development of cities will now be provided jobs closer home.

“Today is a historic day, a scheme for the welfare and livelihood of the poor has been started. My labourer friends, the country understands your emotions and needs. ‘Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan’, starting from Bihar, is a major tool to fulfil this need and emotion,” Modi said.

The scheme will run for 125 days in 116 districts across six states – Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan. Each of the target districts have over 25,000 labourers who have returned home. The scheme will use migrants to create infrastructure worth Rs 50,000 crore through public works.

Interestingly, the state is not making any additional expenditure for the scheme as clarified by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman on Friday who said the sum for the scheme is part of the budget.
