New Delhi: The Supreme Court reprimanded the Center on Monday for the commission of women in the Indian Army. While giving a big verdict on women rights in the army, the bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Ajay Rastogi said that the mindset has to be changed. The court said that the appointment of women officers in the army is an evolutionary process. In this way, the Supreme Court stamped the decision of the High Court and gave the seal to the decision of giving permanent commission in the army to women officers.
The Supreme Court reprimanded the Central Government on this issue. The Supreme Court said that the decision of the High Court was not stayed, yet the Center did not implement the decision of the High Court. There is no reason or justification for taking action on the decision of the High Court. After 9 years of the court’s decision, the Center brought a new policy for 10 streams.
The court said that equality of opportunity and gender justice will guide the participation of women in the army. The Court rejected the views of the Center on the physical characteristics of women. The court said that the central government should change the attitude and mindset. True equality has to be brought in the army. 30% of women are actually deployed in combat zones. Stereotypes denying permanent commissions represent prejudices. Center’s arguments are disturbing. Women army officers have increased the pride of the country. The Supreme Court said that it is not right to deny women officers a command posting. According to the court, the blanket ban on command posting for women cannot be retained in the law.
It is known that on the decision of commissioning women in the army, the Center argued that it would be difficult to adopt it because most of the soldiers coming from urban areas can refuse to adopt because their mentality will not be able to accept it.
