Missing ex-top cop of Mumbai Param Bir Singh finally makes appearance

Mumbai: Days after conveying to the court that he faced threat to life in Mumbai, former Mumbai police commisisoner Param Bir Singh has appeared at the city airport on Thursday morning.

The former top cop, who has been named in at least four cases of extortion, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking protection from arrest. However, the Apex Court noted that the petition had been filed through power of attorney and asked for Param Bir Singh to appear in person. It refused to give him any relief until his whereabouts were known.

His lawyer had, at that time, assured the court that he was very much in India but feared threat to his life if he returned to Mumbai.

On Monday, the SC granted him protection from arrest. It asked him to join the investigation in the cases.

On Thursday, Param Bir Singh flew down to Mumbai from Chandigarh

Singh had been transferred from his position as CP to the Home Guard department after the arrest of a cop, Sachin Vaze, in the case of recovery of explosive-laden SUV outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence ‘Anitilia’. At that time, then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had said that Singh had been moved to allow proper investigation in the case.

Later, Singh accused Deshmukh of extortion. This led to the latter resigning from his post after Bombay High Court directed the CBI to probe the allegation.

Subsequently, Param Bir Singh, too, went missing.
