Pakistani lawmaker proposes mandatory marriage for everyone who is 18 years & above

A Pakistani leader has proposed a draft that makes it mandatory for those above 18 years of age to get married. The draft proposal for The Sindh Compulsory Marriage Act, 2021 was made by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) member Syed Abdul Rasheed to the Sindh Assembly.

The proposal for the Act also makes it mandatory for parents of those who are 18 years and above and not married to provide a justified reason for their children’s unmarried status before the district officials.

It also proposes a fine of Rs500 for parents who fail to get their children aged 18 and above married without any valid reason.

The Act has been proposed as a way to maintain the well-being of society and the lawmaker believes it will also address the problem of child rapes, immoral activities, and other crimes.

The leader while proposing the draft said it will provide a positive pathway to the youth of the province.

He also suggested that the state should take some steps to ease the process of marriage including a ban on dowry and should have standard operating procedures (SOPs) for wedding ceremonies. This he said would prevent grand marriages which are conducted just to impress people and will instead encourage people to go for simple weddings.

He said that usually there is no reason why someone would not marry after 18 years but if there is one then the parents should provide a commitment as to the time frame by which they plan to get the person married.
