Renowned social worker Padma Shri D Prakash Rao on Wednesday passed away at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack. The sexagenarian was battling with COVID-19 and related ailments for the past 20 days.
The hospital’s emergency officer Dr Bhubanananda Maharana told reporters that Rao breathed his last at around 4.15 pm on Wednesday at the special COVID ward.
PM Modi condoles Rao’s death
Hailing the outstanding work done by Rao, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by his demise.
PM Modi said: “Saddened by the demise of Shri D Prakash Rao. The outstanding work that has done will continue motivating people. He rightly saw education as a vital means to empowerment. I recall my meeting with him in Cuttack a few years ago. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Full state honours
Rao will be cremated with full state honours at Kaliaboda crematorium in Cuttack on Thursday, said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. He also expressed grief over the unfortunate demise of Rao.
A team of doctors led by the head of the Department of Medicine Prof Jayant Panda was looking after him since his health condition started deteriorating. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the COVID ward. Rao was hospitalised in December last year following difficulties in breathing. Later, he tested positive for COVID-19.
Conferred Padma Shri in 2019
He was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2019 by the Centre for his contribution towards boosting the value of education among slum and orphan kids in Cuttack.
A tea seller all his life, Rao ran a small school in Buxi Bazaar area in Cuttack and had been providing education to the slum children free of cost.
He became a household name after recognition by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his tireless efforts in educating the poor children in slum area. Rao dedicated his life and earnings towards the education of poor and deprived children.
