Paan shop owners in Ahmedabad are up in arms against the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s order which says that they will be fined Rs10,000 if their patrons are found spitting in and around their shops.

The Gujarat Paan Masala Shop Owners Association said the fine should be pulled back and also threatened to approach the court if the government did not budge from its decision.

The association said that it is unfair to target paan shops for spreading COVID-19 as they are not responsible for the actions of their customers.

Sanjay Joshi, president of The Gujarat Paan Masala Shop Owners Association said that the state has around 1.50 crore people associated with the paan shop business.

He said if one were to take into consideration the others associated with the paan business then 50% of the working population in the state would be associated with business in some or the other way.

Sanjay Joshi said the paan shop owners have suffered huge losses due to the lockdown. He said they were now being targeted with unfair fines and penalties for spreading COVID-19.
