Outrage over Mahua Moitra’s ‘Jain boy’ comment; Rupani demands apology

New Delhi/Rajkot: Trinamool Congress MP in Lok Sabha Mahua Moitra’s comment related to closure of non-veg stalls in Ahmedabad triggered a massive outrage from the Jain community, with several demanding an apology from her.

On Saturday, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who is also from the community, tweeted, “I strongly condemn the statement made by @MahuaMoitra

of TMC (party that has perpetrated widespread violence in the WB) about the Jain youth of Gujarat. She must not forget that core foundation of Jainism is non-violence. TMC must render an apology over this insulting statement.”

In the Lok Sabha, Mahua Moitra had said, “… you fear a future India where a Jain boy can hide from home and enjoy a Kathi Kabab on a street cart in Ahmedabad. So, you forbid non-vegetarian street food in Gujarat municipalities.”

She was criticised heavily for suggesting that Jains, who are strictly vegetarian, eat non-veg food secretly.

Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi called it unfortunate that that Mahua Moitra spoke on the floor of the House with the mindset to defame the Jain community and their culture.

“Under a dangerous mindset, a conspiracy has been done to mislead the world over that community,” he said.
