A man was arrested and another detained by a team of the police and forest department in Kerala in connection with the brutal killing of a pregnant elephant in Palakkad. State’s forest minister K Raju was quoted by local media as saying that the arrested man has been identified as P Wilson. The man works on an estate involved in the production of spices.
More arrests are likely to be made in connection with the case. Local media said that the arrested man and the other who was detained have told the cops that they had set up a snare of fruit filled with crackers to scare wild boars, which often destroyed their farms.
The incident happened on May 27, when a pregnant elephant ate a pineapple filled with crackers. It rushed to the nearby Velliyar river but died even as forest officials tried to rescue it.
The killings had triggered an outrage across the country with even celebrities condemning the action. The issue was given a communal colour after many including, former Union minister Maneka Gandhi, claimed it happened in Muslim-majority Malappuram district. Her comments soon led to outrage from Keralites across the world.
