Omar Abdullah takes a dig at Centre over Chinese sponsorships for IPL

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has taken an indirect dig at Centre over allowing Chinese sponsors for IPL 2020. Omar Abdullah said people are being asked to boycott Chinese goods, whereas IPL 2020 has been allowed to retain its Chinese sponsors.

“Chinese cellphone makers will continue as title sponsors of the IPL while people are told to boycott Chinese products. It’s no wonder China is thumbing its nose at us when we are so confused about how to handle Chinese money/investment/sponsorship/advertising,” Omar wrote on Twitter.

Omar Abdullah was reacting to the IPL governing council’s decision to retain all sponsors. Notably, the title sponsor for the cash-rich tournament is a Chinese mobile company.

‘Feel bad for idiots who broke their Chinese TVs’

Omar Abdullah also tweeted: “BCCI/IPL governing council has decided to retain all sponsors including the big Chinese ones. I feel bad for those idiots who threw their Chinese made TVs off their balconies only to see this happen.”

In a separate tweet, Omar Abdullah wrote: “The sheer suddenness of the move, the unexpected nature of the move, the unpredictability of the move. They don’t know what hit them. Now the Chinese will know………. what we always suspected that we really can’t manage without their sponsorship & advertising.”

IPL retaining Chinese sponsors irked sports lovers

The IPL governing council’s decision to retain Chinese sponsors has not gone down well with cricket lovers. The issue has now snowballed into a controversy. Many cricket fans have expressed their displeasure on social media on the issue. Also, many cricket fans have urged others to boycott the tournament. Many claimed that the BCCI has shown disrespect to the Indian soldiers martyred in the Galwan Valley fighting Chinese transgressions by retaining Chinese sponsors.

IPL 2020 to be held in UAE

After several postponements, the 2020 edition of IPL is going to be held in the UAE from September 19 to November 10. The matches will be held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
