Tokyo: India’s star wrestler Bajrang Punia is just one win away from a medal. Soon after defeating Krygystan’s Ernazar Akmataliev to enter the quarter-finals of the men’s freestyle 65 kg wrestling, Bajrang Punia pinned down Iran’s Morteza Ghiasi Chekra.
He has now advanced to the semi-finals. He will play Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan in the next round. A win in that round will assure India of its next medal.
Ahead of his match, his father had expressed confidence that Bajrang Punia would win a medal for the country.
Earlier in the day, the women’s hockey team lost to Great Britain in the play-off for the bronze, while golfer Aditi Ashok has maintained her number 2 position, thus keeping alive India’s hopes of a medal in golf.
