The Noida police have tendered an apology to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi after a picture of a policeman holding Priyanka Gandhi by her kurta went viral. The incident happened during a ruckus at the DND flyover on Saturday when Priyanka Gandhi was on her way to Hathras to meet the gang-rape victim’s family.
The Gautam Buddh Nagar police have also ordered an inquiry into the incident that happened at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.
Notably, on Saturday, there were scuffles involving Congress workers and the Gautam Buddh Nagar police during which Priyanka Gandhi was manhandled. In the commotion, a helmet-wearing policeman had held the 48-year-old Congress general secretary by her kurta at the DND toll plaza while a crowd surrounded them.
What did Noida police say?
The Noida police have issued a statement in this regard. The statement provides: “Noida Police profoundly regrets the incident with Priyanka Gandhi while handling an unruly crowd at the DND. We also apologise to Priyanka Gandhi.”
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and ordered an inquiry to be conducted by a senior lady officer. We, at Noida Police, are committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of women,” it said.
The police also said that punitive action would be taken after the probe into the matter.
Rahul Gandhi pushed to the ground by police
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had on October 1 alleged that he was pushed to the ground and struck with a baton by the UP police.
Sources had said that a scuffle broke out at the Delhi-Noida border on Thursday afternoon as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi tried to make their way to reach Hathras. As police tried to stop the Congress leaders and the massive crowd from moving forward, Rahul Gandhi was pushed to the ground by the police personnel.
Pictures from the incident became viral on social media. In the pictures, Rahul Gandhi is seen being pushed by policemen. One of the pictures showed the Congress leader lying on the ground as party workers gather around to pick him up.
