- Bhuj MLA Dr Nima Acharya has become the first woman Speaker of Gujarat Assembly
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Assembly has got its first woman Speaker. Bhuj BJP MLA Dr Nima Acharya was elected unopposed to the post after the Opposition Congress supported her candidature.
The new Gujarat Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, met for its first Assembly session on Monday
Patel congratulated Acharya on her election as the Speaker. Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Paresh Dhanani and other Opposition leaders, too, congratulated her.
About Nima Acharya
Dr Acharya, born on December 12, 1947, in Surendranagar, holds a DGO and MD in gynaecology and obstetrics. She was part of the ninth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth Gujarat Assembly. This is the fourteenth.
She has been actively involved in activities related to uplift of women, rural development, sports and other public welfare activities.
