Nima Acharya to be first woman Speaker of Gujarat Assembly

  • Congress supports Nima Acharya’s nomination, but will field Anil Joshiara against BJP’s Jetha Ahir for the post of deputy Speaker

Gandhinagar: Anjar BJP MLA Dr Nima Acharya will be the new Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Her nomination by BJP has been supported by the Opposition Congress. Thus, she is all set to be elected unopposed as the first woman Speaker in the state.

The nomination forms for Nima Acharya as Speaker and Jetha Ahir as Deputy Speaker were submitted by Revenue Minister and former Speaker Rajendra Trivedi and BJP chief whip Pankaj Desai to Assembly secretary DM Patel on Friday.

While Congress will support Acharya’s nomination, it will field Anil Joshiara for the post of deputy speaker. Hence, elections will be held for the post during the upcoming Assembly session next week.

Nima Acharya was named Protem Speaker after Rajendra Trivedi vacated the post ahead of the formation of the new Gujarat Cabinet. Trivedi was named Cabinet minister in the Bhupendra Patel government last week.

However, she resigned on September 20 and Dushyant Patel was made Protem Speaker.

The next Assembly session will be of two days and will be held on September 27-28.
