Navjot Singh Sidhu meets Priyanka Gandhi amid intensifying tussle in Punjab Congress

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday met Priyanka Gandhi amid intensifying infighting in the Punjab unit of the party. The disgruntled Congress leader tweeted in this regard saying, “Had a long meeting with Priyanka Gandhi ji.”

Notably, the meeting comes at a crucial time when the differences between Sidhu and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh are widening ahead of the Assembly polls due next year.

Navjot Singh Sidhu had left his Patiala residence for Delhi on Monday. He was scheduled to meet the Gandhis on Tuesday. However, he could not meet them even as Rahul Gandhi denied any scheduled meeting with the Punjab leader. Sidhu, who had resigned from the Punjab Cabinet after he was divested of the local bodies portfolio in 2019, has been at loggerheads with the chief minister.

Navjot Singh Sidhu criticises CM

Sidhu, who defected to the Congress from the BJP, had openly criticised the CM and the state government for its decision to provide government jobs to sons of two party MLAs. The former cricketer said that merit should be the only criteria.

This apart, Sidhu has also targeted the CM for the delay in justice in the 2015 incidents of sacrilege and subsequent police firing. Amarinder Singh, on the other hand, has criticised Sidhu saying his acts amount to indiscipline.

Revamp likely

A panel of three Congress leaders tasked with taking feedback from MLAs, MPs and leaders from Punjab and recommend a solution has called for changes in the state government as well as party unit ahead of the assembly polls. Notably, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are desperately trying to put an end to the dispute and unify the Punjab unit before the state election next year.
