Union minister Narayan Rane arrested for his remarks against Maharashtra CM

BJP leader and Union minister Narayan Rane was arrested by the Ratnagiri police and taken to the Sangameshwar police station for his remarks about slapping Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for what he claimed as the latter’s ignorance of the year of India’s independence. The arrest was made after Rane failed to secure protection from arrest from the Bombay High Court that refused to provide the minister an urgent hearing.

What the HC said

Narayan Rane’s petition was mentioned before a division bench of Justices SS Shinde and NJ Jamadar, seeking urgent hearing today itself. The court, however, refused to hear it and said mentioning (of the petition) was not allowed and asked the lawyer to follow the procedure.

“File an application before the Registry department seeking urgent hearing and then we will consider,” the Bombay HC said. The petition has challenged the FIRs lodged against Rane in Pune, Nashik and Mahad in Raigad.

What Narayan Rane said

The Union minister during his Jan Ashirwad Yatra in Raigad district on Monday said, “It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to enquire about the count of years of independence during his speech. Had I been there, I would have given (him) a tight slap.”

Following the registration of FIRs and reports of his imminent arrest, the minister clarified on Tuesday, “I have not committed any offence. The reports of my arrest are false. I have not received any intimation of the legal action or arrest notice.” The minister also said that the police should understand that his party (BJP) is running the government at the Centre.

Shiv Sena-BJP clash

Rane’s remarks have miffed the Shiv Sena, whose workers put several posters in Mumbai and other places, calling him a ‘kombdi chor’ (chicken stealer), a reference to the poultry shop he ran in Chembur five decades ago, during his initial stint with the Bal Thackeray-led party. There were also clashes between Shiv Sena and BJP workers near Rane’s residence in Mumbai.

Shiv Sena’s Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg MP Vinayak Raut said Rane has lost his mental balance. “To impress BJP leadership, Rane has been attacking Shiv Sena and its leaders. He lost his mental balance after his induction into the Modi-led ministry. Modi should show him the door,” Raut said.
