Maharashtra: Senior Congress MLA Nana Patole today elected as Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Nana Patole came after the BJP took back the name of Kisan Kathore as the party’s nominee with minutes to go before the 10 am deadline.The Congress had announced Nana Patole’s name as a candidate for the Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP alliance.
Nana Patole from congress represent a four-time MLA, represents from Sakoli Assembly segment in Vidarbha, Maharashtra. Nana Patole has always been raising the issue of farmers. Nana Patole lost to Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He was with the Congress earlier but quit and contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls on a BJP ticket; he beat NCP strongman Praful Patel from the Bhandara-Gondiya seat.

However, in December 2017 he quit following differences with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and returned to the Congress.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that Nana Patole comes from a peasant family, so it is expected that he will do justice to all.Congress’s decision to nominate Patole could be an attempt to maintain a balance of power between various regions as most of the top NCP and Congress leaders hail from western Maharashtra.
