Chennai/New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict S Nalini Sriharan. Who has been serving a life term imprisonment for over 28 years. She has started a hunger strike inside the Vellore women’s prison and demanded the released after 28 years.
She had submitted a multiple petitions to the state government for the early release. Earlier, one of the convicts in the assassination, RP Ravichandran appeal to PM Narendra Modi for his direct intervention in the release of all seven convicts in the case. The state government resolution requesting the release of these seven convicts under article 161 of the Constitution is pending with Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
Nalini and Murugan, others convicted for life in the case are Suthenthira Raja alias Santhan, AG Perarivalan, Robert Payas, Jayakumar and Ravichandran are serving as the life imprisonment. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 by a suicide bomber attack by the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Elam (LTTE) during an election rally at Sriperumbadur near Chennai.
