Nadda, Nitish Kumar meet in Bihar for upcoming polls

Top BJP leaders on Saturday met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to discuss the upcoming assembly elections in the state. The leaders are on a two-day visit to the state.

Media reports said BJP president JP Nadda met Nitish Kumar at his residence and discussions on seat-sharing among others took place.

The meeting was also attended by former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP national general secretary Bhupendra Yadav. Fadnavis will be handling the BJP’s campaign for the Bihar election,

LJP remains a critical factor

Some concerns for the coalition remain as JD(U) has been facing a barrage of criticism from its own ally Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) led by Chirag Paswan.

Earlier Paswan had told a television channel that he had no problem with Nitish Kumar as the face of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) but that there was a need to agree on the common minimum programme.

The LJP is campaigning for ‘Bihar First and Bihari First’.  The LJP has been extremely critical of Nitish Kumar’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent floods in the state.

Fadnavis earlier told the media that only a government that can work with the Centre can take the state forward.

He gave the example of West Bengal where the state government’s reluctance in sending a list of beneficiaries for the PM Kisan scheme has led to losses for farmers.  He said Bihar is assured of a bright future under the NDA.

Sushant Singh angle

Fadnavis also dismissed the Opposition’s allegations that the ruling party was trying to cash in on the alleged suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput.

The BJP had earlier put up posters of the actor with the slogan na bhoolenge na bhoolne denge. Fadnavis said they did not want to make the actor’s death an election issue but they will ensure that he gets justice.

The election to the 243 assembly seats of Bihar is due in October-November. The tenure of the current assembly ends on November 29.  The BJP has already announced that it will contest the elections under Nitish Kumar.
