Yangon: A Myanmar court on Monday sentenced Nobel laureate and ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in jail.

According to sources, the court found Suu Kyi guilty in two charges related to illegally importing and possessing walkie talkies and one of violating restrictions related to Covid-19.

Last month, she had been handed a similar sentence after the court found her guilty of inciting dissent and breaking Covid rules under a natural disasters law.

Suu Kyi’s democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD) was overthrown in a military coup in February last year and she was placed under house arrest.

The military claimed the elections were unfair. However, this claim was rejected by election observers.

Suu Kyi was charged with offences termed flimsy by many.

In one case, she was charged with violating Covid restrictions by waving at a group of supporters during the election campaign despite wearing a mask and face shield. She has denied all the charges.
