Delhi court extends Sushil Kumar’s custody by 4 days in murder case


A Delhi court has granted Delhi Police four more days of custody of two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar and his associate Ajay. The wrestler and his accomplice were arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the Sagar Rana murder case. The court had earlier granted Delhi Police six days remand of Sushil Kumar on May 23.

The Delhi Police had sought 7 days’ custody of the wrestler and his associate and called Sushil Kumar the mastermind of the murder. Sushil Kumar and his accomplice Ajay Kumar had been on the run after their name emerged in the murder of fellow wrestler Sagar Rana. The two were later arrested from outer Delhi’s Mundka area after being on the run for three weeks.

Rana and two of his friends were mercilessly beaten allegedly by Kumar and 18-20 of his aides at Chhatrasal Stadium’s parking area on May 4. All three were hospitalized where Rana later died of his injuries.

So far nine people have been arrested for the murder. Another wrestler Binder from Tikri village who was arrested in the case said he was among those who beat up Rana as per Sushil Kumar’s instructions. Police are yet to recover Kumar’s mobile phone or the clothes he wore during the attack

Police had earlier found a video of the incident recorded by Sushil Kumar of the alleged beating. Police said Kumar did it to terrorize the wrestling circuit in the city.

Sushil Kumar has won two Olympic medals, three Commonwealth Games gold medals, a world championship gold, a bronze in the Asian Games, and four medals in the Asian Championship.
