The metropolitan court adjudicating the defamation complaint against actress Kangana Ranaut by lyricist Javed Akhtar has warned the former to appear before it or else a warrant will be issued against her.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Kangana Ranaut’s lawyer requested the court for exemption from appearance for the day citing health grounds. The actress also submitted a medical certificate and said that the actor has been travelling for the promotion of her film and has developed COVID-19 symptoms.
Javed Akhtar’s lawyer, however, vehemently opposed it saying that it was an orchestrated tactic to delay the proceedings in the court. The counsel for the lyricist also said that Ranaut has refused to appear before the court for one reason or the other since summons were issued to her in February this year.
After hearing the submissions, metropolitan magistrate RR Khan allowed Ranaut to be exempted from appearance for the day. He then posted the matter for hearing on September 20, with a strict warning that she will have to appear before the court on the next hearing.
Earlier this month, the Bombay High Court dismissed an appeal filed by Kangana Ranaut against the criminal defamation proceedings initiated against her by the lower court based on the complaint made by Akhtar.
Javed Akhtar had filed the criminal complaint against Kangana Ranaut in November last year before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate for allegedly making defamatory and baseless comments against him in a television interview given to journalist Arnab Goswami.
In December 2020, the court directed the Juhu police to conduct an inquiry into Javed Akhtar’s complaint against Kangana Ranaut and then initiated criminal proceedings against her and issued summons to her in February this year.
In his complaint, Akhtar had alleged that Ranaut had made defamatory statements on national and international television, “in what appears to be a clear campaign to malign and tarnish (Akhtar) in the eyes of the general public”.
