Speculations are rife that Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy may return to BJP. Earlier, Mukul Roy’s son Shubhranshu Roy claimed that his father was missing. But, within a few hours he reached Delhi, BJP sources say that Mukul Roy wants to return to BJP. On arriving Delhi, Mukul Roy also talked to a senior BJP leader over the phone.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Mukul Roy, who was reported “untraceable” since Monday evening by his son but later spotted in Delhi at night, said he is still a BJP legislator and his visit’s purpose was to join back the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending speculation around his next political move.
After leaving his home, Roy headed for Kolkata airport and boarded a flight for Delhi around 7.45pm. Subhranshu said two people had taken the veteran politician to the national capital without informing the family. While one was Mukul’s driver, another was his attendant.
Subhranshu told the media on Tuesday morning that “dirty politics” was being played with his ailing father and efforts were on to malign Abhishek Banerjee, TMC’s national general secretary and chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.
“My father is almost 70 years old, and suffers from multiple ailments including dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He had to undergo surgery and takes 18 medicines every day. Dirty politics is being played with him. The target is to malign Abhishek Banerjee,” the son said.
Roy, a founding member of the TMC, had earlier joined the BJP in 2017, citing differences with party leadership and was made BJP’s national vice-president. In 2021, he, however, returned to the TMC after winning the election as a saffron candidate.
