The great Martin Luther King had famously said, “Our Lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Gujarat Exclusive believes in addition to this, one needs courage to stand and be vocal for things that matter to people at large. And we have been doing it continuously as that is the soul of our existence.
Gujarat Exclusive had published two stories about the wife of former Gujarat-cadre IAS officer Atanu Chakraborty. The stories titled— ‘PMO gets complaint about ex-babu’s wife, an MA political science grad, being appointed as advisor HR for govt company’ and ‘Guj govt ends service of wife of ex-IAS Atanu Chakraborty after controversy erupts over her appointment’—were carried on June 22 and July 5, respectively.
Subsequent to the publication of these stories, we received a legal notice from Mr Atanu Chakraborty on July 7 asking us to remove the stories and threatening to initiate legal proceedings against us, including for defamation.
We want to make it clear that we stand by the news reports and the reporter. Rowan Williams said, “The most powerful defences the media can offer for controversial actions is, of course, public interest.” And for us public interest is the supreme cause for any story.
We also want to emphasise that Gujarat Exclusive follows the highest standards of journalism and editorial ethics. Mr Chakraborty is free to take any legal recourse he finds suitable and we are ready to respond to the same in the court of law.
We also want to clarify that in the tedious and fast-paced newsgathering process, human error and judgment are inevitable. We have always corrected the mistakes that have been brought to our notice. Striving for 100 per cent accuracy has always been one of our most important guiding principles and we continue to work hard for achieving the same.
