MP Mohan Delkar found dead in Mumbai hotel, suicide suspected

A seven-time MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Mohan Delkar, was found dead at a hotel in Mumbai’s Marine Drive. The MP is suspected to have committed suicide at the hotel and his body has been sent for postmortem.

A team from the local police station reached the Sea Green Hotel where the MP’s body was found and an investigation has been launched into the case.

Delkar was with the Congress but left the party in 2019. He went on to win 2019 general election as an independent candidate. He represented Dadra and Nagar Haveli in Parliament for a long time.

Sources said that the initial investigation points towards suicide. The police also said that a suicide note has been also recovered.

Political career of Mohan Delkar

Mohan Delkar was born on December 19, 1962, to Sanjibhai Delkar. Sanjibhai Delkar was elected to Lok Sabha from Dadra and Nagar Haveli in 1967 as Congress candidate.

Mohan Delkar started his career as a trade union leader in Silvassa and fought for the rights of tribal people working in different factories. Later, he started Adivasi Vikas Sangathan for the tribals in 1985.

In 1989, he was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha from Dadra and Nagar Haveli constituency as an independent candidate. In 1991 and 1996 he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha as an Indian National Congress candidate from the same constituency.

In 1998, he was again elected to the Lok Sabha as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the same constituency. In 1999 and 2004, he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha as an independent and the Bharatiya Navshakti Party (BNP) candidate respectively. On February 4, 2009, he re-joined the Indian National Congress. In 2019, he distanced himself from the Congress Party and was elected as an independent politician. However, in 2020, he joined the Janata Dal (United).
