The Modi government has taken a big step to make the abortion law easier in the country. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which proposed extension of the maximum limit for abortion to 24 weeks from 20 weeks. Due to which the rape victims and minor women are expected to benefit greatly.

A proposal to this effect was approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Abortion Act (Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act) 1971 will be amended for this purpose. For this, the bill will now be tabled in the upcoming session of the Parliament.

After the meeting, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters that this will ensure safe termination of pregnancies and also give women reproductive rights over their bodies. “The extension to 24 weeks will also help victims of rape, girls with disabilities as well as minors, who may not realise they are pregnant until later,” he said.
