Militants ambush Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur; kill 7 including commanding officer, family

Imphal: The convoy of a commanding officer of a unit of Assam Rifles was ambushed by terrorists in Singhat sub-division of Churachandpur district in Manipur, according to sources, The officer, Colonel Viplav Tripathi of 46 Assam Rifles, his wife and son, who were with him, were reportedly killed in the attack. Four other personnel, too, are feared dead.

The officer and his family were accompanied by the Quick Response Team.

Three persons who were injured in the ambush were taken to Behiang Primary Health Centre.

The security forces took over and launched search operations in the vicinity.

While there is no confirmation yet on who was behind the attack, it is believed that People’s Liberation Army in Manipur might have a role.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the incident and called it a “cowardly act”. He also assured that the culprits would be brought to justice.
