Moscow: Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91.
He died after a serious and long illness, said
Russian news agency Sputnik, citing hospital sources.
He was the last leader of the Uniion of Soviet Socialist Republics(USSR) before it was dissolved in 1991.
He was also the recepient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was also praised for his pivotal role in ending the Cold War.
“Mikhail Gorbachev was a one-of-a kind statesman who changed the course of history. The world has lost a towering global leader, committed multilateralist, and tireless advocate for peace,” tweeted Antonio Guterras, UN secretary general.
