Close to 100 migrant workers gathered at the IIM-Ahmedabad road in the city in Vastrapur area and pelted stones at the police and passers-by on Monday. The migrants were demanding that they be sent home.
Police had to lob teargas shells to disperse the crowd and several of them were detained, police said. They said the migrants all of a sudden gathered on the road and engaged in indiscriminate stone-pelting.
The situation has been brought under control now, the police said. Police are also searching labourer settlements nearby to nab some of those who participated in the stone pelting. It is not known what triggered the crowd of migrants to gather there.
Earlier too several states including Gujarat had reported cases, post the lockdown, where migrants had all of a sudden gathered demanding that they be sent home. Many of these gatherings had happened after false Whatsapp messages stated that there were arrangements being made to send them home.
The industrial areas of Gujarat has constantly reported clashes between police and migrants since the lockdown began as the workers unable to find employment and earn money desperately try to return home.
