Mehsana election officer who demanded Rs3 lakh to accept nomination form nabbed taking bribe

An election officer in Mehsana was caught red-handed for accepting a bribe ahead of the civic body polls in the district.

The election officer posted in Mehsana identified as Rajendra Brahmbhatt had sought Rs3 lakh as a bribe from a candidate to accept the nomination form that had some information missing. The candidate had left some information out and the officer had demanded the bribe to accept the form despite the defects.

The officer asked for Rs3 lakh from the woman candidate who was contesting from the Savala seat. The woman initially gave him Rs1 lakh and he was nabbed by the ACB while accepting the second installment. It is believed that more officials are involved in corruption. The officer is being questioned by the Gandhinagar ACB.

Civic body elections in Gujarat

The local body elections in Gujarat will be held in two phases. In the first phase on February 21, elections will be held for 6 municipal corporations including Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The results for the elections will be declared on February 23.

In the second phase on February 28, elections will be organized for municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. The results for the second phase will be declared on March 2.
