The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and mayor Bijal Patel were once again caught in a controversy after a sapling distribution in a society that has been declared as a micro containment zone by the civic body.
The tulsi sapling distribution was organised at the Mangalmurti Apartment in Naranpura, which is a micro containment zone, as part of the World Environment Day celebration. The move has led to many questioning the seriousness of the first citizen and the civic body in following the COVID-19 norms for tackling the pandemic.
The First Citizen of the city had refused to comment on organising an event in a micro containment zone. Media reports said that after distribution of a few saplings, a crowd had surged as a result of which the programme had to be stopped. Questions are being raised as to how a programme could be organised at a micro containment zone.
Sources said that revenue minister Kaushik Patel was to attend the event but he did not attend it. However, Deputy Mayor, Dinesh Makwana and party leader Amit Shah were present at the event. The civic body was to distribute only 50 saplings but a crowd gathered and social distancing went for a toss.
Patel had on Thursday told a media house that the area was quite big and only a small part of it was under containment. The programme was held at a place that was not part of the containment zone, she told the media house!
