Masks made mandatory in Ahmedabad, fine up to Rs5k for violation

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Sunday announced that wearing masks in the city will be compulsory for all citizens at public places from 6 am of April 13. The order is applicable for citizens of Ahmedabad as well as outsiders who visit the city.

Municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra said violators will be slapped with a fine up to Rs5,000 and those who refuse to pay the fine will attract an FIR and imprisonment up to three years under the provisions of the Epidemic Disease Act. Nehra clarified that wearing a simple homemade mask is also allowed. All shopkeepers, milk parlour staff, and vegetable and fruit vendors will have to abide by this order.

The municipal commissioner said hundreds of AMC teams will be roaming around the city to ensure the implementation of the order and collect fines from violators.

As per the AMC order, citizens can use a handkerchief or loose cloth for covering nose and mouth. For the first violation, Rs1,000 will be levied and all subsequent violations will attract a penalty of Rs5,000. If a violator does not pay the penalty, he will be booked under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and the Epidemic Disease Act.
