Manoj Sinha has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after the sudden exit of G C Murmu on Wednesday evening.
Girish Chandra Murmu’s resignation came on the first anniversary of the centre’s move to scrap special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.
Sinha, 61, is a senior BJP leader, three-time MP and former Union Minister and his appointment is seen as a move by the Center to revive the political process in the state. Sinha is believed to have a good rapport with National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah.
Who is GC Murmu?
A 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer IAS officer, GC Murmu has the trust of both PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
He was posted in the home department when Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat.
He later became the Principal Secretary in the Gujarat CMO when Anandinben Patel was the chief minister.
He joined the Union Finance Ministry as joint secretary expenditure department after Modi became the Prime Minister.
Murmu was handpicked for his role as J&K’s Lieutenant Governor at a time when the state was divided into three parts.
Murmu had earlier too resigned ahead of his tenure after his elevation to the constitutional post in J&K.
Why Murmu quit?
Media reports attributed various reasons for Murmu’s sudden exit from the Raj Bhavan in J&K.
Some said his recent comments to the media about the timing of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir had not gone down well with political leaders.
The Election Commission also said that the L-G should refrain from commenting on issues that are not in his domain.
Murmu also made statements favouring restoration of 4G network in J&K.
He had said he did not see any problem in the restoration of 4G network in Jammu and Kashmir, this too media reports, said did not sit well with the top leadership.
The Supreme Court is hearing a petition on the continued suspension of 4G internet in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 2019.
Media reports also said there were differences between Murmu and chief secretary BVR Subrahmanyam.
It is speculated that Murmu will be appointed as the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) following the retirement of Rajiv Mehrishi.
