Former AIADMK minister M Manikandan arrested for raping Malaysian woman

Former AIADMK minister M Manikandan has been arrested in Bengaluru by a special team of the Chennai City Police for allegedly raping a Malaysian woman.  The complaint against the minister was filed two weeks ago at the women’s police station in Adyar.

The woman in her complaint claimed that she is an actor by profession and had been in a relationship with Manikandan for years. During their relationship, Manikandan had allegedly impregnated her multiple times and then forced her to abort while also threatening her. The victim had also claimed that he had lured her into the relationship with the promise of marriage.

Manikandan has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including charges of rape, causing miscarriage and cheating.

Charges levelled by the woman

Addressing reporters, the actor had displayed a copy of her complaint and other documents, including WhatsApp conversations she had with the accused.

She added that she was introduced to the minister in 2017 through a mutual friend while she was working for Malaysian Tourism. The actor claimed that the minister developed a relationship with her on the pretext of investing in stocks in Malaysia. The minister had promised to marry her despite being already married.

However, Manikandan, during an interview with a local Tamil channel, had said that he doesn’t know the woman and this was a conspiracy to extort money from him and malign his image.

Manikandan was absconding

Following the FIR, Manikandan approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail. He claimed that there is no truth in the accusations levelled against him and that the complaint and documents produced by the victim were concocted.

Manikandan also contended that the charges against him do not have merit for a case under Section 313 of IPC (causing miscarriage without a woman’s consent). However, the court refused to grant him bail, following which he was absconding. The Chennai City Police formed a special team to nab him and the 44-year-old politician was eventually nabbed by the special team in Bengaluru.
