Man arrested with heroine worth Rs 26 cr by Kolkata Police

In yet another major drug haul in the country, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police on Sunday nabbed a man from the city with heroin weighing 5.17 kg having a market value of around Rs 26 crore. The wanted drug peddler was nabbed after the cops got a tip about his movement.

The man was arrested on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near Captain Bheri in Kolkata on the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday. He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Narcotic Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

“We seized from his possession heroin weighing around 5.177 kg having a market value of Rs 25.88 crore in the international grey market,” a police officer said. Notably, the man belongs to Durgapur, an industrial city in West Bengal.

Heroin seizures across the country Kolkata

Earlier this month, officials of the Customs department deployed at the Delhi airport have arrested two Zambian men who were trying to smuggle heroin worth Rs 7.36 crore into the country. The duo was intercepted at the airport after their arrival from Johannesburg via Addis Ababa.

On June 28, Customs officials at the Delhi Airport had intercepted two South African nationals with heroin worth Rs 126 crore in their possession. In the last six months, Customs officers at the Delhi International Airport have seized heroin worth over Rs 600 crore, officials said on Monday.

In August last year, the Mumbai Customs and DRI had seized 191 kg of heroin worth around Rs 1,000 crore which was believed to have originated from Afghanistan, from a cargo container at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.

In one of the biggest drug hauls in recent times, heroin weighing 283 kg and pegged at approximately Rs 2,000 crore in the international market was seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on July 5. The consignment was to be transported to Punjab by road from Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai.

According to the DRI, the confiscated heroin was concealed in two containers with talcum stones. Prabhjit Singh, a supplier, from Punjab’s Taran Tarn area, has been arrested in connection with the case along with two others from Madhya Pradesh.
