The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested a man after an encounter in connection with the rape and murder of a three-year-old in Lakhimpur Kheri. The three-year-old was found dead in a sugarcane field in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Thursday morning.
The police had initially said she was murdered but on Friday said the child was raped and strangled. The rape emerged after an autopsy of the body was done. This is the third such incident of a minor being raped and murdered in the district in 20 days.
The girl had gone missing on Wednesday and her body was found in a field half a kilometre from her home. The child’s father has named one Lekhram from the village as the perpetrator stating that he had murdered the child over an old rivalry.
The accused was caught after the police formed four teams to look for him.
Other cases in the district
Earlier a 17-year-old girl was found dead outside her village after she was allegedly raped. She had gone to fill a scholarship application. Her mutilated body was found near a dry pond around 200 metres from her village.
In another incident, a 13-year-old Dalit girl was found raped and strangled in a sugarcane field just outside her village in the same district. Two men from her village were later arrested in connection with the rape and murder.
There were also reports that the child’s eyes were gouged out and her tongue cut off. The local police however denied the same stating that the child’s eyes had some bruises and had not been taken out. She also had some injuries on her tongue but it was intact.
It had also led to uproar across the state with many questioning the law and order in the state.
