Crucial test for Mamata Banerjee; EC announces Bhabanipur bypolls on Sept 30

New Delhi: The Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in West Bengal will go for by-elections on September 30. For Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, this will be a crucial test which she must clear to continue holding her chair. Besides Bhabanipur, Samserganj and Jangipur in West Bengal, too, will witness by-elections.

“…considering the constitutional exigency and special request from the state of West Bengal, it has (been) decided to hold bypoll for AC 159 – Bhabanipur. Much stricter norms have been kept by the Commission as an abundant caution to safeguard from COVID-19,” the Election Commission said.

In the Assembly elections held earlier this year, Mamata Banerjee had decided to contest from Nandigram instead of her stronghold Bhabanipur. That decision proved to be a wrong one, with Mamata losing to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.

The Trinamool Congress had won with a sweeping majority, so Mamata Banerjee returned as CM. But to continue to hold that position, she must win an election within six months.

TMC MLA Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay who had won from Bhabanipur had later vacated the seat to allow Mamata to contest from there in the by-elections.

Along with West Bengal, bypolls will be held on one seat in Odisha; however, they have been deferred in 31 other constituencies in states like Maharashtra, Telangana and others in view of the Covid situation.

“After taking into consideration the inputs and views of Chief Secretaries of the concerned states, and the respective Chief Electoral Officers, the Commission has decided not to hold bypolls in other 31 Assembly constituencies and 3 Parliamentary constituencies,” EC said.
