One of the worst-affected states Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are facing a shortage of COVID-19 vaccines and might run out of the jabs this week if fresh supplies are not sent by the Union government. Both the state governments requested the Centre on Wednesday to send additional doses of the vaccine.

The Maharashtra government has said that the current stock of 14 lakh jabs will last for only three days. Similarly, the Andhra Pradesh government said that the current stock of 3.7 lakh vaccines will last until Thursday.

Maharashtra’s health minister Rajesh Tope told the media that he has informed about the vaccine shortage to Union health minister Harsh Vardhan. Tope said he had requested the Union government to provide a supply of 40 lakh vaccine doses per week.

Tope said, “We have 14 lakh vaccine doses that will last us only for three days. After that, vaccination may come to a standstill. We need a stock of 40 lakh vaccine doses per week.” He also said that the Maharashtra government is ready to accept the Centre’s challenge of immunising 6 lakh people daily, but it requires an additional supply of vaccines.

Tope said that the state government is currently vaccinating 4.5 lakh people daily. He added that due to the shortage of vaccine doses, many vaccination centres had to be shut.

Maharashtra, like Delhi, is among the states that have repeatedly requested the Narendra Modi government to expand the immunisation drive by including people aged below 45. Currently, the Union government has allowed the vaccination of people aged 45 years and above.

The Centre, however, has turned down their request saying that the priority of the government is to vaccinate people who need it rather than people who want it.
