The Rathyatra of the Jagannath temple in the city being restricted within the temple premises has taken a new turn with the Mahant of the temple stating that he was kept in the dark. He also alleged that people whom he had trusted to negotiate with the government had failed him.

Mahant Dilipdasji Maharaj on Wednesday told the media that until the last moment he had been kept in the dark about the events.  Though he did not take any names, the Mahant said that the man whom he had trusted to negotiate with the government had also been instrumental in keeping him in the dark.

It should be noted that after the chief minister performed the pahind vidhi, the ceremonial cleaning of the rath route by a silver broom, a discussion ensued between temple officials, the cops and the home minister. The temple officials wanted the rath to be taken out of the temple atleast outside the gate so that the tradition of taking the chariot out of temple on Rathyatra was maintained. But the cops and administration were against it and eventually it was decided that the chariot will go around the temple premises only.

He also questioned as to if the government was so keen on taking out the Rathyatra, why was the temple not made a party in the petition that the state filed in the Gujarat high court. He also questioned as to why the government waited till the last moment to file a petition in the high court.
