New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has objected to the European Union over proposals against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He wrote to European Parliament President David Maria Sassoli over the resolutions moved against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in that legislature, saying it is inappropriate for one legislature to pass judgement on another and the practice can be misused by vested interests.

In a letter to European Parliament Speaker Davit Maria Sassouli wrote, “This Act provides for granting easier citizenship to those who have been subjected to religious persecution in our immediate neighbourhood. It is not aimed at taking away citizenship from anybody.”Accusing the government of “discriminating against, harassing and prosecuting national and religious minorities and silencing any opposition, human rights groups and journalists critical of the government”, he said.

The European Union Left / Nordic Green Left (GUE / NGL) group submitted a proposal earlier this week to the European Union Parliament. Subsequently, the proposal presented against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the European Union Parliament will be discussed and voted on. On that point, India protested saying that the new citizenship law is completely an internal matter of India. The European Union Parliament should not take any action that questions the law passed by the democratic system.
