Beijing: Amid rise in fresh cases of Covid-19, China has annouced a complete lockdown in Lanzhou city, the provincial capital of northwestern province Gansu.
Lanzhou has a population of 4 million.
China has once again witnessed an outbreak of Covid-19 cases, which has been linked to the highly contagious Delta variant.
The lockdown in Lanzhou comes amid detection of 29 cases across the country, six of which are from the city.
Residents will be allowed to step out only for essential supplies or medical treatment.
“All types of residential communities are to implement closed management,” an official statement read.
Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel outside the city.
The latest outbreak is being linked to domestic tourists. Health officials have warned that more cases could be detected with ramping up of testing.
The first outbreak of Covid-19 was in China. The country has successfully managed to control it and had even eased restrictions when cases declined last year.
