Even before the civic polls could be announced, the political scene is heating up in the state. A BJP corporator and several other local leaders associated with the BJP joined the Congress in the presence of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel in Rajkot on Thursday.
Dakshanben Bhesania, Rajkot Ward No 5, corporator joined the Grand Old Party in the presence of Hardik Patel on Thursday. Interestingly, the shift of some BJP corporators and workers to Congress comes at a time when BJP state president CR Patil visited Saurashtra and met party workers and leaders.
Rajkot also happens to be the home of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Apart from the corporator, Saurashtra Marketing Yard traders association president Atul Kamani also joined the Congress. Well-known social worker Chandni Limbasiya has also followed the other two in joining Congress. 20 other youth BJP leaders from ABVP have also become members of the opposition party.
The sudden surge of members joining the Congress has got the Saffron party worried as it gears up for the civic polls as well as the by-elections.
The exodus comes after BJP state president CR Patil met workers and party leaders in Rajkot recently. The BJP members flocking to Congress makes it seem that Patil was unsuccessful in doing any damage control for the party.
Won’t need to import leaders from other parties: Patil
BJP Vice-President CR Patil had told the media after his maiden visit to Saurashtra that the party has 1.13 crore workers in the state and strong leaders and hence would not need to import anyone from other parties.
Patil had during the visit said his immediate priority was to win civic body polls and by-election to eight Assembly seats. He also said that the party was looking to win all the 182 Assembly seats in the state in 2022 general elections.
Hardik Patel is on tour to garner support for Congress
Hardik Patel has been meeting party workers across the state after being appointed working president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC).
Hardik Patel had visited the Khodaldham in Rajkot and Umiyadham in Jamnagar after being made the GPCC working committee president. He had also met party workers in various districts and urged them to ensure victory for the Congress in the civic polls.
