Massive landslide kills 9 in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur; state announces Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia

Kinnaur: A massive landslide that resulted in boulders falling off the hills and hitting a bridge in Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh left nine persons dead and several injured. Most victims were tourists.

Shocking videos and visuals of the incident, which were trending on social media during the day, showed how huge boulders rolled down in Kinnaur’s Sangla Valley and hit the Batseri bridge which collapsed under them.

The vehicles were also badly damaged.

The rescue team immediately reached the spot and began rescue operations.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, while offering his condolences to the families of the deceased, annnounced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to them. The government would take care of the treatment of the injured, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, expressed grief at the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
