Lalu Prasad Yadav gets bail in fifth fodder scam case

Ranchi: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in the infamous fodder scam. This one was worth Rs 139.35 crore and related to fraudulent withdrawals from Doranda Treasury.

Lalu Prasad had been found guilty by a special CBI court in the fifth fodder scam case in February this year.

He was earlier convicted in four other cases related to the scam worth a total of Rs 950 crore.

His bail application was challenged by the CBI.

However, his lawyer argued that he had already served 42 months in jail in this case, against the 30-month term.

“The court has accepted our petition for suspension of the sentence and has granted the bail,” his lawyer Prabhat Kumar said.

The fodder scam relates to illegal withdrawals from government funds allocated for fodder in Bihar. It had come to light in 1996. Lalu Prasad was named as an accused in 1997.
