Lakhimpur Kheri: Supreme Court to hear case suo motu on Friday

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday. It will hear the case on Friday, according to news agency ANI.

The SC has also ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report in the case, with names of accused, those against whom an FIR has been registered and those who have been arrested till now.

 

The case

At least four farmers were killed when a jeep hit them at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. The farmers accused Ashish Mishra, son of Union minister Ajay Mishra, of murder of the four deceased.

The group was reportedly returning from a protest when the incident took place. An FIR was registered in the case, naming Ashish Mishra and others as accused.

As per the FIR, which names around 15 others along with Ashish, the incident was “pre-mediated” and the “conspiracy was hatched by the BJP minister and his son”.

So far, no action has been taken against Ashish or his father.

Meanwhile, leaders of Opposition parties have been visiting the deceased’s families after the Uttar Pradesh government allowed groups of five to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.
