New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday appointed former judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court Rakesh Kumar Jain to oversee investigation in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case in which eight persons, including four farmers and a journalist were killed.

The Apex court also reconstituted the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the case. It named senior IPS officers SB Shirodkar, Deepinder Singh and Padmaja Chauhan to the team, news agency ANI reported.

The next hearing in the case will take place after the charge sheet is filed and Jain submits a report.

On Monday, the SC had asked the Uttar Pradesh government to upgrade the level of officers who were part of the SIT. The UP government had agreed to the SC’s earlier suggestion to appoint a retired HC judge to monitor investigation. However, the court observed that the officers on the SIT were all from Lakhimpur Kheri, noting that officers of higher grade were required for the SIT. The bench had asked the UP government for names of IPS officers from UP but from outside Lakhimpur Kheri.

On Wednesday, the court finalized the names of the SIT members.
