Chandigarh: Punjab Congress leader Navjyot Singh Sidhu has warned the UP government of a protest march by the state unit of the party to Lakhimpur Kheri if the accused in Sunday’s killing of farmers is not arrested and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is not released from illegal detention.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Sidhu said, “If, by tomorrow, the Union Minister’s son behind the brutal murder of farmers is not arrested, and our leader @PriyankaGandhi being unlawfully arrested, fighting for farmers is not released, the Punjab Congress will march towards Lakhimpur Kheri!”

Ashish Mishra, son of Union minister Ajay Mishra, has been accused of mowing down farmers in the district. He was booked for murder in an FIR, but has not yet been arrested. The father-son duo has claimed that Ashish was not present at the spot at the time of the incident.

At least four farmers were killed after a jeep ran over them. Several persons were injured in the violence that ensued.

Following the violence, Opposition parties began to demand Ajay Mishra’s resignation and Ashish’s arrest.

Priyanka Gandhi was detained when she was on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri.
